How to Beat the ATS: Check Your Resume Score and Fix the Keywords

You applied, you were qualified, and you heard nothing. In most mid-size and large companies the reason is not a person — it is software. An applicant tracking system (ATS) reads every resume, pulls out names, dates, job titles and skills, and ranks the pile against the job advert. Recruiters then read from the top of that pile. If your resume scores low, it may never be read by anyone at all.

The good news: the ATS is not judging your talent. It is matching patterns — and patterns can be fixed in twenty minutes with our free ATS Resume Checker.

What the ATS actually checks

The keyword method, step by step

  1. Open the ATS Resume Checker and paste your resume.
  2. Paste the full job description underneath it. Run the check.
  3. Read the missing-keywords list. These are the terms the advert repeats that your resume never mentions.
  4. Go through the list honestly. For every keyword that is genuinely true of you, add it — in your skills section, or inside a bullet about the work where you used it.
  5. Never add a keyword you cannot back up in an interview. The ATS gets you the interview; you still have to survive it.
  6. Re-run the check. Most people jump 15–30 points in one pass.

Five fixes that lift almost every resume

What a good score does — and does not — promise

A high score means the software can read you and ranks you well against that advert. It does not guarantee an interview: a human still reads the top resumes, which is why your summary and first bullet matter so much. Think of the ATS check as getting through the door — your experience does the talking after that.
